TIOMBÉ SPEAKS WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN HAWAII

Tiombé Speaks With Hawaii's Youth in
USATF’s Be a Champion Program

Waikiki, Hawaii (November 28, 2007) – Tiombé Hurd (Upper Marlboro, Maryland), joined 2004 Olympic 100m hurdles champion Joanna Hayes and 2004 Olympic 4th place high jumper Jamie Nieto today at Stevenson Middle School in Waikiki to interact with students as part of USA Track & Field’s Be a Champion program.  The trio held
two assemblies and spoke to the young students about healthy living, staying physically active and saying no to drugs.

"I am excited about being a part of USA Track & Field’s Be A Champion program,” says Hurd.  “With so many kids spending several hours a day playing video games and watching TV, I think it’s important to emphasize the value of being physically active.  Getting involved in sports is a great way to teach children social skills and teamwork as well as help fight the growing epidemic of obesity in young children.  Even if they do not eventually pursue competitive sports in the future, reaching out to them at a young age is the first step to helping them lead a healthier lifestyle.  However, you never know, we might just meet a few of our future Olympians."

Hurd and her fellow teammates are in Waikiki attending USA Track & Field's annual convention. The annual convention brings together everyone associated with the sport including athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators
